This is a review for Gary not Ameriprise. I would go less than 1 star if I could. I had moved to the Chicago area for a new job and since I was already with Ameriprise, I was referred to Gary. The first thing he did is enroll me in this life insurance certificate plan that I unfortunately didn't see through at the time. He then came up with a long term 30 page financial plan portfolio and I started investing. At first I was pleased since he seemed to be making me money and I was in a good paying job, this went on for 3 years. What I didn't realize at the time was that he was making more money off of me than I was off of his plan. The trouble began in the end of my 3rd year with him. He suddenly came to me and said that he needed $600.00 to come up with a new financial plan portfolio! I of course thought this was ridiculous and refused. Then, I unexpectedly lost my job. Gary had no plan for something like this in my portfolio. This is when I finally realized that the funds he had me in were more advantageous to the advisor than the client. Worse yet, the life insurance certificate required a monthly payment of $300.00 to keep it active, something I didn't realize before nor was told this by Gary. I see from other reviews that he has pushed this on other clients as well. I had to move to another state and town and never received a follow up call from Gary. I said at the beginning that this was not a review of all Ameriprise advisers. The new one I got after my move was much more interested in my financial gains then his own and even questioned some of the investments I had done with Gary, especially the life insurance certificate. I ended up selling the certificate, at a big loss of course.

cookie cutter approach. higher commission investments, lacks follow up and reviews

Gary has the ability to push you to buy, for example, mutual funds that are bad investments or insurance because they have really high fees. Those mutual funds give the adviser a commission in exchange. The result is the adviser gets paid more money for giving you bad advice... period I realized that after 5 years - DONT CARE What the investments do, advisor/ Ameriprise Financial gets to keep the fixed high commission.
